Huxley House, 87 Avenue Road, St John's Wood

Introducing Huxley House

Set on a spacious, tree-lined avenue in St John’s Wood lies one of London’s truly exceptional private residences. Mature London Plane trees, whose boughs lean together to form an elegant green arch, hint that this is one of the city’s leafiest areas, an oasis of green deceptively close to the beating heart of central London.

Huxley House’s impressive façade, complete with robust Doric columns, draws its inspiration from the Neoclassical architecture that is a distinct hallmark of nearby Marylebone, Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park. By fusing the very best of past and present, the impeccably finished, contemporary interior complements the classical detailing to create a home that offers an unrivalled array of facilities.

A Walk through Huxley House

Meticulous consideration has been given to the House’s design to create a home that feels at once informal, yet impressive, luxurious, yet welcoming. The property’s layout, whilst extensive, boasts an effortless fluidity meaning its size never feels overwhelming.

Upon entering, the double-height entrance hall soars above you creating a dramatic first impression. An abundance of light draws the eye towards the balustraded gallery above, while the expansive polished limestone floor leads the eye along its length towards the elegant cantilevered staircase and immaculately landscaped gardens that lie beyond.

Creating A Masterpiece

With a level of care and attention to detail one might expect in a work of art, Huxley House was created in collaboration with experts regarded as leaders in their field. The ambition was to design a property that could complement the scale of its surroundings, yet emerge as impressively distinct amongst the mix of imposing properties that line Avenue Road.

Adam Architecture — foremost exponents of classical architecture in Europe — created the vision, including the double-height Doric portico with columns hewn from the finest Portuguese limestone.

The History of St. John’s Wood

Over the course of almost 2,000 years London has steadily spread outwards from its Roman origins on the banks of the Thames to create the city of villages that we know today. The land on which Avenue Road now stands was originally an area of woodland set within a large expanse of oak forest known as the ‘Great Forest of Middlesex’.

Residential development of the area finally began in 1802. The development of the nearby Marylebone Park by John Nash also provided impetus for building, with construction beginning on the Regent’s Canal in 1811, generating interest in the area as a refined middle class suburban district.

Living in St. John’s Wood

Huxley House is perfectly situated within walking distance of some of London’s most elegant residential areas including Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill, Little Venice, Belsize Park and Hampstead Heath. Mere minutes away, the chic boutiques, restaurants and cafés of St John’s Wood and Primrose Hill make this one of the city’s most desirable areas.

The nearby lush spaces of Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park imbue the area with an atmosphere not commonly found in central London — a calmer, slower pace that replaces frenetic city life, yet remains just over two and a half miles north of Mayfair.
